Gutters are part of the roof system, not an accessory. They carry the water a roof sheds away from the fascia, siding, and foundation, and when they fail the damage shows up far below the roofline as rotted trim, stained siding, and pooling at the base of the house. Hamilton Exteriors installs and replaces gutters as part of our roofing work, so the roof edge, drip edge, and gutters are detailed together rather than by two separate trades that never talk.
We install seamless gutters, formed on site to the exact length of each run so the only joints are at corners and downspouts. Fewer seams means fewer places to leak and clog over the years. Sizing matters too: Bay Area winter storms can dump a lot of rain in a short window, so we size the gutters and downspouts to actually move that volume instead of overflowing at the first heavy downpour.
The right time to handle gutters is during a roof replacement. With the old roof off, we set the drip edge and flashing correctly and tie the new gutters into that edge so water transfers cleanly from shingle to gutter. Replacing gutters on their own is straightforward too, and it is often the fix when fascia is rotting or water is sheeting down the side of the house during storms.
Failing gutters cause more than a nuisance. Overflow rots the fascia board the gutters hang from, drives water behind the siding, and saturates the soil against the foundation. Catching worn or undersized gutters early, and keeping them clear of the leaf litter common under Bay Area oaks and pines, prevents the much larger cost of repairing trim, siding, and grading later.
Gutter work is pulled and warrantied like the rest of our roofing, and we are licensed, bonded, and insured under CSLB #1078806. Because one contractor handles the roof and the gutters, there is a single point of accountability if anything along the roof edge ever needs attention.
We install and replace gutters across Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, and Napa counties, on their own or as part of a roof replacement. Start with an online roof quote or call us, and we will assess your roof edge and drainage and recommend the right gutter setup for your home.
Signs Your Gutters Need Attention
| Sign | What It Means | What We Do |
|---|---|---|
| Overflow in rain | Undersized, clogged, or mis-pitched | Re-size, re-slope, or replace |
| Peeling fascia paint | Water sitting against the board | Replace gutters and repair fascia |
| Sagging runs | Failing hangers or rot behind | Re-hang or replace the run |
| Pooling at foundation | Downspouts too short or blocked | Extend and redirect downspouts |
| Many visible seams | Old sectional gutters leaking | Install seamless gutters |
Why Gutters Are Part of the Roof System
A roof's job is to move water off the house, and gutters are the last step in that path. When they overflow or leak, the water the roof shed correctly ends up in the fascia, the siding, and the soil against the foundation. That is why we treat gutters as roofing work: the drip edge, flashing, and gutter all have to line up so water transfers cleanly from the shingle to the downspout. Handing those details to a separate trade is where most edge leaks start.
Seamless vs Sectional Gutters
Sectional gutters are cut from stock lengths and joined every few feet, and every joint is a future leak and clog point. Seamless gutters are formed on site to the exact length of each run, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts. They cost a little more up front and last longer with far less maintenance, which is why we install seamless on Bay Area homes where winter storms test every joint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Didn't find the answer to your question? Call Now (650) 977-3351
What areas in the Bay Area do you serve?
We serve six Bay Area counties — Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara — covering 47 cities from Oakland to San Jose. Our crews are based in Castro Valley, putting us within 45 minutes of every city we serve. We handle permits and know the building codes for each jurisdiction, which matters because requirements and fees vary significantly between cities.
How does billing and financing work?
We offer $0-down financing with approved credit, 12-month same-as-cash plans, and extended terms up to 15 years for larger projects. You only pay for completed, inspected work — we never ask for full payment before the job is done. Your project manager will walk you through every option during your estimate appointment. We also accept checks, ACH, and all major credit cards.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. CSLB License #1078806 — verify it anytime at cslb.ca.gov. We carry $2M general liability, full workers’ comp, and are bonded per California law. We hold GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Preferred, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, and James Hardie Elite Preferred certifications — each requires annual training and quality audits to maintain. We’re happy to provide proof of insurance before any work begins.
Do I need a permit for my exterior project?
Most exterior projects in the Bay Area require a building permit. Fees vary by city — Oakland runs $200–$600, Peninsula cities often more. We handle the entire permit process: application, plan submission, and scheduling inspections. Permit fees appear as a separate line item in your estimate so you’ll see every cost upfront. For homes in WUI fire zones (Berkeley Hills, Oakland Hills, parts of Marin), we ensure full compliance with local fire-rated material requirements.
Do you install gutters separately or only with a roof?
Both. We replace gutters on their own and also install them as part of a roof replacement, when the drip edge and flashing can be detailed together for a cleaner water transfer.
What are seamless gutters?
Seamless gutters are formed on site to the exact length of each run, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts. Fewer seams means fewer places to leak or clog over time.
Why do my gutters overflow in heavy rain?
Usually the gutters or downspouts are undersized, clogged, or pitched wrong. Bay Area storms move a lot of water fast, so we size and slope the system to handle real downpours rather than light drizzle.
Can failing gutters damage my roof or home?
Yes. Overflow rots the fascia the gutters hang from, drives water behind siding, and saturates soil against the foundation. Gutters are the roof's drainage, so failures show up as much larger repairs below.
Should I replace gutters when I replace my roof?
It is the ideal time. With the old roof off, we set the drip edge and flashing correctly and tie new gutters into that edge, which is harder to get right when gutters are added later.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year in most of the Bay Area, and more often under oaks and pines that drop heavy leaf litter. Keeping them clear is the simplest way to prevent overflow and fascia rot.
